It's kind of sad, AoC has, very slowly, started becoming a better game. Yet another one of those "I wonder what it could have been like..." things, where if they held the release off by a few months, or even a year, they may have had a much better game.
I strongly beleive if the game stays around by this time next year it will have become a very good game. Whether it's successful or not by then is unlikely, though.
Anyway, for those interested. Our city now has lots of merchants. Also, each building gives a bonus to every class. Example, the temple gives everyone 1 resist, or something like that.
They've also, it sounds like, started slowly finishing off levels 60+. It's still not really there yet. and honestly I'm going to drop AoC soon, but still, it seems like it truely is becoming a better game. _________________ Avier Meteoris

| See that's the part to me that is *UNACCEPTABLE*. When you cap at level 80, finish the content from 50-80. It is unacceptable to have a game where you cant "finish" the first phase of progression. Every other MMO you could, except "Better get it out before WOTLK and WAR", aka Age of Conan. |

Cash is king.
Sounds like Age of Conan is having the same problems that Vanguard had, namely the VCs demanded a return on investment. This effectly ruined Smedley's reputation among the MMORPG industry (he was the creative genius behind EQ) because the bean counters for Vanguard denied extended funding for beta/alpha research & development which effectively forced Smedley to release the unfinished game to begin cash flow into the company. Sounds, though, that Vanguard was more complete... and they had an entire continent that was useless (you could basically level from 0-20 in it, but nothing more).
One bit of irony during vanguard was that they brought all their employees into the parking lot at 4:30 on a Friday and told them all that they no longer had jobs... At 5:00 PM, there was a press release that SoE had acquired the company and retained Smedley. On the company's website, they had an animated gif that flashed through 4 pictures... one of a guy with a sad face, one showing people walking to the parking lot, one showing an assembly in the parking lot and one showing people driving their cars. That gif was supposed to show the relaxed lifestyle of the company, but ironically wound up detailing the mass firing of the people that worked there.
Anyway, I hope AoC works out better. Vanguard has since turned into a decent game. With enough time, AoC will do the same, Im sure. They have cash flowing in, now, so they are most likely working with an expanded budget. _________________ IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO

Funcom is norwiegan, if htey survived the total disaster that was the AO release, this is a massive success.
You aren't really allowed to go out of bussiness in Norway, you especially aren't allowed to lay people off. The business laws there are really fucked if you're used to U.S.
I know a lot about the company because my buddy married the ex girlfriend of Funcoms graphics engines guy... he moved to london for two years to be closer to norway, then moved her back here.
Long story short: if you lay people off you must still pay them until the company closes, if you expand again they must be hired back. if you close the company there is no incorporation like in america so you lose your house/everything. luckily though, the government makes a ton of money off oil and basically subsidizes norwiegan owned business that compete internationally. there is a lot of movitation in that country to find a way to keep a business going (but not much to start one). _________________

I'm betting that the purse strings forced this release. The fact that they're a norwegian company, though, is extremely positive news for their future success of the game. The company still needs to answer to the investors, though.
The delays lowered the value significantly:

Look at the spike around May08 when the game launched:
http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=FUNCOM.OL#chart1:symbol=funcom.ol;range=6m;indicator=dividend+volume;charttype=line;crosshair=on;ohlcvalues=0;logscale=off;source=undefined
AoC should pick up the pace pretty quickly. Not only because their employees are protected, but also because they now have a large river of cash flowing in and an incentive to appeal to their customer base to push development. _________________ IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO

It will be interesting to see how many people will continue their subscription to AoC. I believe many people will probably quit playing and go back to WoW or whatever MMORPG they were playing before. It seems that AoC will probably become a game that tides you over until War comes out or atleast until the beta. I always had a feeling that AoC was just a filler game, especially when I reached lvl 40. I started to lose hope on the success of the game. By lvl 30 you start to notice the gaps in the game and bugs and by 40 its completly noticeable. I will probably continue to play so I can get to know everyone in the guild better, but I am hoping War will learn from AoC's mistakes and not rush out a game simply due to the bean counters or suits that are short sighted. _________________ Kalamor--Guardian lvl 100

i haven't logged into aoc for like 3 weeks now. I'm gonna unsubscribe it myself. Might come back in a year or so if it's decent, but right now, it's nothing worth playing once the graphics oohs and ahhhs go away _________________ -Erridor the prettiest kitty - Awarded Best in Show - January 2010

It's tough to make the switch to new games. I can't tell you how many useless game licenses I have sitting on my floor from both my WoW and EQ careers...
You need a huge hit to completely make the switch. Mostly because this game is about the chat bar as much as it is about the actual content. The mere existence of a "History of CM" thread shows how close everyone here is... and how hard it will be to switch to a new game without moving a good chunk of the players.
Will WAR be the next superhit? Who knows... Hard to compete against Blizzard's name power. _________________ IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO, IMHO
